Vermont Yankee Siren Measurements - 05/01/09

BRRC was contracted by the Entergy Corporation to verify the proper function of new sirens they added to their siren system.

Background

©The Entergy Corporation has added a number of sirens to the existing sirens around the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in an effort to improve the quality of their Public Alert system.  The goal was to verify that the new sirens were producing the specified output sound level, and to make sure that they were alerting the public far from the sirens.

Approach

©This project was carried out in two phases.  The first phase of this project was to put several sound level meters out in the far-field up to 2 miles from the nearest sirens.  The received sound levels were then measured during a full siren test. The second phase was to conduct ANSI S12.14 tests on three of the new sirens.  A bucket truck was used for these tests and the normal rotation function of these sirens was stopped to make the measurements easier.
