Parris Island Noise Study - 08/14/08

BRRC wins contract to determine noise environment at Parris Island Marine Base due to an increase in exercises around the Island.

Parris Island
Rifle Range at Parris Island Marine Base

Purpose

The primary goal of this project is to determine the noise environment related to training exercises on Parris Island, small arms fire in particular.  There are two main areas of concern, the small arms training ranges and the Crucible training facility.

Approach

Noise from the training at the ranges and the Crucible will be calculated using the Small Arms Noise Assessment Model (SARNAM).  Each of the eight ranges will be modeled, together with their surrounding berms, to determine the noise foot print from these operations. The Crucible which involves both small arms fire as well as artillery simulation will also be modeled to create a noise foot print.  The noise foot print contours will be calculated using NMPlot.
